How do I add subtitles to a home video?

Is it possible to add subtitles to a home video without buying special programs or anything? How? It might be a 10-20 minute video... Is that really hard to do?

  1. If you have windows, MovieMaker should come with it (i think). You can do it with movie maker. Im not sure how though
  2. I think Windows comes with a media editor actually. Its called Mover maker. Check in your Accessory's folder
  3. Yes, you can. Windows > Start > All Programs > Windows Movie Maker Apple > iMovie Adding titles is simple in both of those programs. Here is some advice on adding them > http://www.dvdigest.net/Page.asp?NavID=173 Good luck!
  4. Windows Movie Maker includes the ability to add subtitles to home video. From the tools menu, choose Titles and Credits, click on the option to Add title on the selected clip, add your text and then configure text size and positioning. The only trick is that this gets complicated if you need lots of text. And the subtitles will be a permanent part of the finished video as there is no way to toggle them on and off. Here's a visual tutorial for both Windows Movie Maker and iMovie: http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20050921_making_movie_subtitles.html
