Why do my DVD players automatically turn on subtitles?

I've noticed with the last three DVD players that I've bought, after a year or so, when I put a movie in, the subtitles are turned on. The players never did that when I first bought them... why do they do it all of a suddden like that? Is there some trick or service button I can use to stop that from happening? The two that it did it on were both Apex brand, and a portable DVD player was Polaroid... they all did it. I can turn it off, but my problem is that I don't want it to turn on at all.

1. You should be able to go thru the menu and turn that function off. If you told your exact model someone may be able to give you instuction.
2. What brand are they? Toshiba's? I have a Toshiba that does that. Out of all the DVD players I've ever owned, it's the only one that's ever done that.
3. Truly there should be a setting in the system menu of the DVD player that allows that function to be dis-/en-abled. Look through your owners manual (or, if you don't have one, look online for the manual and download it--that's what I do) for anything regarding changing system settings. It should also be addressed in the Troubleshooting section...
