how do i get subtitles to show up outside vcl?

ok i downloaded a file in MKV when i open up in VLC PLAYER i have to do this to get the subtiles show up so yea... :open video>subtitle track then it shows up yay till i close the file and then i have to repeat the process so im asking how do i make them so up permently please tell me also when i enable the subtiles they look like jibberish then followed by whats said it says <fontcolor="#fefefe"> then what ever is being said ok but what if i convert the file for my ps3 will the subtitles still show up? or what do i need to do

1. Subtitles being on or off by default is done during encoding there is nothing you can do. To have subtitles not look like crap download and install http://www.cccp-project.net/ then use either zoom player or media player classic

3. Well VLC is a pain in the but. In order to set your subs to open on by default you have to edit a configuration file (even then it doesn't always work). Here's a little guide on how to do it: http://thegum7.googlepages.com/howtosetdefaultlanguageinvlc Also, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND that you get rid of VLC and find yourself a new player. VLC has all kinds of troubles playing subtitles. 1) They often look ugly as sin. 2) They have trouble showing up or show up in jibberish as you are experiencing. 3) It can't handle a lot of the fancy filters and often ignores subtitle comments, causing more problems. The "<fontcolor="#fefefe">" that is showing up is supposed to tell the player what color the subtitles should be. And this is precisely what it does in any COMPETENT media player. However, VLC not only ignores this tag and doesn't change the color of the font, it also drops it onto the screen as if it were a part of the dialog- which it obviously isn't. As I said, VLC sucks at subtitles.
