How fast can Chinese be read?
I'm asking specifically on Chinese subtitles. I only know a few characters, but I know how some characters can look similar to each other. Sometimes the characters aren't very visible when they are complex. So can someone fluent in Chinese read the subtitles completely and understand even if the audio wasn't on?

- Quite easily its their native language, its just like us ready english subtitles
- A native chinese speaker can read Chinese subtitles as fast as english speakers can read english. Its only a matter of practice and you should be able to recognize the most commonly used characters with the slightest glance.
- It does not merely apply to native Chinese speakers; many Singaporeans and Hongkongers can read and understand Chinese subtitles extremely well too.
- very fast, for a high school student,600 characters/min, someone can reach 1000/min, it is just,,practice makes perfect.
- yup, they can guess the words by the sentence, but some uncommon words might give them a hard time.
