How to put subtitles to a DVD rip movie on TV?

Does anyone know how to get the subtitles to show on a movie when I'm watching it on tv? i have the movie on my flash drive (downloaded) and it has the folder with movie and subtitles. my dvd player has a flash port and when i play the movie from the folder i press subtitle with my remote but it says that there are no, even if they are there. help???
