Get Subtitles

How do I activate Subtitles in VLC media player?

Currently I open up the video, then go to: video -> subtitles track -> load file -> (click the .ass subtitle file) -> hit open. I then go back to subtitles track and it has a new file there for me to click, but when i do, no subtitles or anything show up, nothing changes. How do I properly get the subtitles to show?

1. I'm not using the menus. Usually i name the subtitle just like the movie except extension. EXample: movie.avi movie.srt or movie.sub etc... and it works all the time.
2. The above answer is correct. The avi and srt/sub files need to be in the same folder and have EXACTLY the same name before the dot.(So rename one or the other as necessary) VLC finds it automatically.
