Question regarding subtitles in Chinese bootleg copies of anime series...?

I never buy these sets- partly for moral-highground-related reasons, but largely due to problems with audio/video quality and - most importantly - all the stories of dreadful subtitle translations. So- this is more out of curiosity than anything else. I wanted to ask about these awful subtitles. I've heard people saying that many of these Chinese bootlegs have subtitles which read like someone rammed the script through Babelfish of Google translator and that it is pretty ridiculous. Now- this makes me curious... Why on earth do these Chinese bootleggers not use the subtitles that are used in official international releases? Why do they use terrible Babelfish-esque translations when there are professional quality ones readily available on the market?

1. My best guess would be that the horrible subtitles were made before any official retail copies existed. Their source of video might come from direct recording from TV. And by the time any legit DVDs are released, they don't bother ripping from them, out of plain laziness. Bear in mind that they're in it to make a quick buck out of very little work. And while DVD rips would definitely provide a much better quality, their profits would remain pretty much the same.
