How do you add subtitles to a movie?

When adding subtitles do you add it to selected scenes. Will movie maker let me put in subtitles. Is there a software I can download to add subtitles to a movie. But something I dont need to burn a dvd for, someting I could just save the movie on my comp.(well actually Im making a short cartoon) lol

1. http://www.opensubtitles.org/en is the BEST resource. comprehensive list of movies that are subtitled, and easy to download. they have helpful FAQs too. however, my hint is that if you download a small text document, and just make sure that it is named the same thing as your .avi file (it'll end in .srt instead), then Windows should hook them up in Media Player automatically (make sure they're in the same folder too). Alternatively, if you're using Region-Free software (I recommend DVD Region-Free), then it can sync subtitles and video. It's sometimes fun to go into the subtitles and change some of the words around (such as a character's name) to be the name of a friend with whom you're watching the movie. Especially when it quickly becomes obvious that this isn't their real name.
