How to sync separately downloaded subtitles with the movie?

i have a movie in .avi format, without subtitles, so i went to opensubtitles.org and downloaded '.srt' file of the subtitles according to the instructions i put that file in my movie directory and then started the movie, the subtitles appear but they are about 20 seconds out of phase, they appear before the dialogues are spoken, how to sync them properly thanks

1. If all of them are consistently 20 seconds out of place (not just randomly appearing) then use a program like VirtualDUBMod to add or delete 20 seconds from the beginning.
