Get Subtitles

every time i open sub format in avidemux, keep telling me "Cannot identify subtitle format". please help?

i have avidemux program to embed sub into video. but every time i open up the sub format. its telling me cannot identify subtitle format. what am i suppose to do. am i suppose to convert sub to srt? if yes, how do i do that?
