Get Subtitles

What's a good program for adding subtitles to video files?

I need to add subtitles to an original video file that I produced. Anyone have a good (and free!) software program that they would recommend to do this? I tried DivXLand Media Subtitler but it required a bunch of downloads to get it to work and I think it messed up my computer so I had to uninstall. I was hoping to find another one. Thanks!
